Good morning friends! I am back in Connecticut, and I have so many photos and things I want to share from my trip to California to visit my sister Yuliya! I was there Sunday, July 2-Thursday, July 6 which turned out to be plenty of time to do the things we wanted to do. Yuliya lives in Berkeley which is about a half an hour away from San Francisco. When I visited her last year, she lived in southern California, so it was fun to get to explore a new side of the state this time around.
Because I have so much content to share, I am going to break it up into three parts. This post is about my first two days of the trip exploring Berkeley and San Francisco. Part 2 will be about our crazy hike at Point Reyes National Seashore and part 3 will be about our day at the beautiful Yuba River. Stay tuned! I know it’s a lot to read, so I won’t be mad if you just look at the pictures 🙂
Day 1- Sunday, July 2, 2017
My flight to California was at 9am aka super early, because I wanted to make sure Yuliya and I had time to do things on Sunday (In retrospect, having such an early flight was not the best idea, because I ended up falling asleep around 8pm that night.)
Yuliya picked me up from the San Francisco airport and after I dropped my things off at her house (which is really cute by the way), we set out to explore Berkeley. We walked around the downtown area and then the UC Berkeley campus. UC Berkeley is one of the best public schools in the country and it is known for being very liberal and diverse, much like the rest of the state. The campus was really big and pretty!
After we walked around some more, we got hungry and stopped for dinner at Dara’s which was a really cute thai place. We loved the decor, and the food was really yummy too! We finished the night by watching The Keepers on Netflix. Has anyone else watched it? I am mind blown.
^ Seriously, how cute is she?
Day 2- Monday, July 3
On Monday, I was determined to go to a local coffee shop called Philz Coffee. They have this mint mojito coffee which is amazing!
After breakfast, Yuliya had to go to work for a couple hours so I was left to my own devices. I went on a walk in Oakland which is the next city over and then hung out at the house for a bit. In both Oakland and Berkeley, the houses are so pretty! Most of them have lots of flowers and plants surrounding them. When Yuliya returned from work, we drove to the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park which was really cool! It’s a huge park and seriously picture perfect. We walked around all the different gardens and talked about life and relationships.
After the Botanical Garden, I really wanted to see the Golden Gate Bridge! I’ve been to San Francisco once before but never got to see the bridge and it is such a quintessential thing to do so I basically forced Yuliya to take me. She thinks it’s a tourist trap, and she’s right. When we got to the bridge, there were so many people and nowhere to park so she let me run out of the car and take a couple pictures while she looped around the lot.
Following the bridge, we planned on getting dinner in the city, but after driving around for a while searching for parking, we decided to go to a place in her area instead. I LOVE Mexican food and Urbano Latino in Oakland did not disappoint! We shared some tacos, enchiladas and a margarita! So.good.
So, because it’s not always rainbows and butterflies, I wanted to mention the fight me and Yuliya got into during my visit #ItsOKtobereal. While we’re best friends and rarely fight about anything especially since we don’t live together anymore, we still bicker sometimes. Mostly it’s me complaining about her driving and her telling me to shut up.
During my trip, however, I discovered one of Yuliya’s quirks. Recently she started sleeping with a fan on JUST for the noise of it. She “can’t sleep without it” she says. Mind you, this fan isn’t even pointing in her direction. And it’s not just any fan it’s like THE LOUDEST FAN EVER. Like where did she get it? The 90’s?!! Me on the other hand? I need to sleep in silence. If you ever want to piss me off, just prevent me from sleeping. Combine this with the 3 hour time difference and the fact that I am an early riser, things got ugly. Royal Bit*# Olga definitely came out. It went something like this:
Me: Can you turn the fan off? I can’t sleep like this!!
Yuliya: NO, I need it to fall asleep. I can’t sleep without it.
Me: That’s not normal!!! You don’t just sleep with the fan on for the noise. That’s a really bad habit.
Yuliya: NO. I can’t adjust to YOUR sleeping habits. If you turn it off, I’m gonna turn it back on!!
Me: You’re a bad host!! Turn the fu*king fan off!!!!!
Yuliya: That’s it, I’m LEAVING! BYEEEEEE
She ended up leaving me alone at her place to sleep at her boyfriend’s house. I was like peeeaceeeeee! The next morning she came back and wanted to discuss the “fight” and I was not having it AT ALL. She goes “Can we talk about last night, I am not just gonna pretend like it didn’t happen?” And I was all like “Who are you, MY THERAPIST?!!” Clearly, my communication skills are up there. I am much better at writing my feelings than talking about them, ha. I am actually laughing as I type this because it’s so silly and such a first world thing to fight about, but it happens!
I want to keep it real with you guys, and I’m not perfect. Life isn’t perfect. I had a really hard time sleeping at night, and would wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning every day. Nonetheless, I had an amazing trip! Yuliya is actually coming to Connecticut this week, so I’ll be seeing her in a couple of days (I love you Yuli!). That’s all for today, come back soon for parts 2 and 3!
