Confession: I like Valentine’s Day so much more when I’m single. I think it’s because I don’t have any expectations. There’s no pressure to make the perfect plans or give/get the perfect sentimental gift. In the past, I’ve made the mistake of thinking things should happen a certain way. We should go here and you should KNOW to get me this and you should be really impressed with what I get you and if all of that doesn’t happen as planned then we’re obviously doomed. Sound familiar to you?
I’m happy to say I’ve abandoned those old ways of thinking and my unrealistic expectations. Now, I can simply enjoy the day for what it is- a fun “holiday” where you can show some extra love to the people in your life.
Inevitably, something special always does end up happening on Valentine’s Day. I’ll go out for dinner with my girlfriends or someone will surprise me with chocolate or a small gift. Last year, my manager was away during Valentine’s Day and she hid some cute stationary and a card in my desk drawers for me to open on the day (hi Jill!!). It was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture made even more special by the fact that I wasn’t expecting anything at all.
Whether you’re in a relationship or not, my advice is to not set any expectations. Don’t put pressure on your significant other to plan the most romantic day ever. If you’re single, don’t worry about not having a “Valentine.” Get dressed up for the fun of it, write a thoughtful card to someone you love, and just enjoy the day. Being single on Valentine’s Day ain’t so bad 😉
Speaking of dressing up, when I think of Valentine’s Day, I think of red (hence the dress I’m wearing), but you don’t have to stick to that color scheme. You also don’t have to stick to dresses. A lace top with some jeans can be really sexy. I think the key is to just do something a little different than your usual. On special occasions, I add a little more makeup like eyeliner or a bold lip, but you do you! Have fun with your look and do it because it makes YOU feel good.
